Sheep

I get angry like other people, but how often are we angry at things that have been laid out for us to simmer over? Everything is being manipulated by "interested parties" to reflect the views that THEY hold. But how do you know that your views are yours and not simply a manufactured reality? You can either believe one argument or another.

The simple fact is that we're being lied to all the time. Only it's convenient to believe this particular lie at this particular moment. Is climate change really happening, are we all going to hell for our sins, and how do we know chicken tastes like chicken?

In the great scheme of things, the lies that we're told don't matter. We believe something to be true because someone else said it was so. They're view of an event or a thing becomes our truth. But fundamentally humans are a trusting species, or at least a herding species. We have a need to be part of a greater, wider norm. Maybe radical thinkers are radical because they don't think like everybody else.

All those that will tell you "I'm a free thinker" really aren't. Why would they describe themselves that way? Either they think or they don't. I know that my thoughts are somewhat aligned to those shared by the society I live in. If they weren't I wouldn't want to be part of it. But like everyone else, I have to try to fit in to a box, not because it makes me comfortable, but it makes others comfortable. So somewhere in the blur of wanting acceptance, doing the right thing cause it's normal and buying one size fits all everything, I've become a sheep.

Speaking out

For a reason I don't quite understand people seem to keep their heads down and just get on with things. They're not interested in exposing themselves to the rancour of those that are perceived to have greater power and authority than they. But is that the best way? The right way? I suspect not

I don't know why people stress about speaking out? Fear I guess. I've been there. I'm still there. But the last time I checked, Ireland was a free country, and you are free to speak your mind on whatever subject you like. I can't vouch for others, but I am worried that my meagre allowance will be taken off me if I create too many ripples. Part of me doesn't care though. As someone who is in a vulnerable enough position every cent counts. That's why I don't cause as much trouble as I know I could.

The CSO reported that in 2011, 13% of the population under 55 were disabled. That's a large portion of citizens that are at risk from sanctions being imposed on them by those in power. No one earns the right to be where they are by virtue of time served. In my view you earn the right to be where you are from the work you put into getting there. That's not to say that those with little experience are of no value and that those who have the experience are of greater value and know what they're doing.

Fear on its own will only go so far though. Eventually the victim of that fear will bite its tormentor, but sometimes the victim needs to be rescued. People of all backgrounds are going to bite back. Our "leaders" will hopefully never work in politics again. But they have no need to work again, the Irish tax payer will fund them to the end of their lives for service to their country, even if that service was less than patriotic.
